About Us

The Kanawha Valley Fellowship Home, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) transitional home for male, recovering alcoholics and addicted drug users who are serious about maintaining their sobriety and are willing to work towards the opportunity to begin a new life. We believe in building life skills and positive habits through education and structured accountability.

Throughout the 54-year history of our organization, we have provided shelter, fed and helped hundreds of recovering alcoholics and addicts, most of whom were without a home (98.4 percent in 2018), become whole individuals returning to society at large, our local community, and to their families as productive citizens without the guilt, shame and humiliation of active addiction.

Our mission, on behalf of our residents, is to strive to move beyond traditional transitional housing through education, counseling and positive recovery efforts. Indirectly, we also help children, women and communities as the men are working, paying current and back child support, alimony, fines and taxes.

Our recent history shows that we continually strive to improve both our programs and facilities to add to each resident’s experience at the Home:

KVFH is comprised of a volunteer Board of Directors (local businessmen and professionals), an executive director, and a live-in house manager.

Services

The Kanawha Valley Fellowship Home(KVFH) believes that education is a core part of recovery from drug and alcohol addiction and substance use disorder. Mandatory Weekly Recovery Steps meetings are held in-house. Text books are provided upon admission to KVFH which include the Big Book Alcoholics Anonymous, 12&12, Living Sober and Daily Reflections. Group and Individual counseling sessions are held on a weekly basis with a Certified Licensed Addiction counselor. Informal Q&A sessions are held throughout the week with the Executive Director and the Assistant Director/Operations Manager both of whom are very active in long-term recovery. Men are encouraged to continue with formal education and assistance is offered to promote these activities. Education makes individuals transition suitable for new opportunities and helps all of society in the long run.

KVFH is a highly structured program with a long history of success in helping men recover from drug and alcohol addiction plus substance use disorder. Sit down dinners are held Monday through Thursday. Residents are required to attend a minimum of 5 AA/NA meetings each week. An in-house Recovery Meeting is held weekly as well as an AA meeting. Individual and group counseling is mandatory and held on a weekly basis. All residents are required to agree to live in a transitional home for 6 to 12 months, pay normal rent and fees, get a sponsor, do light chores and volunteer in the community. The structure is designed to foster good habits and help the men do the right next thing.

The living environment at KVFH is very clean and safe. We have 15 individual bedrooms in the main house with 8 bathrooms plus we have 6 intermediate care apartments in another home. After Care apartments (up to 2 years) are available in a third building that we own and manage. Strict curfews are enforced, random weekly substance tests are administered, meeting attendance and sponsorship encounters are closely monitored and recorded. A weekly residents meeting takes place on Wednesday evening. A nominal rent/fee factor is charged to every resident to offset costs and teach responsibility. All residents are required to get a job and work a minimum of 35 hours per week, this fosters good habits and accountability.
